During PERPETUATE plenary meeting, held in Bath on January 12-13 2012, some experimental tests have been performed at ENEA Casaccia Laboratory, in Rome, with a DIRECT ONLINE CONTACT with PERPETUATE staff.

This experiments have been possible thanks to ENEA virtual laboratory of Materials and Qualification of Components  which is known as “DySCo Virtual  Lab” (Structural Dynamic, numerical Simulation qualification tests and vibration Control).

The PERPETUATE experiment during the meeting in Bath,  involved  the construction of a 1:6 scaled mock-up of the Egyptians lateranense obelisk in Rome under the supervision of Dr. Gerardo De Canio, head of the Laboratory of qualification of materials, components and systems.
The model is  composed of three blocks to be tested by shaking table at ENEA Research Center by DySCo Virtual Lab.

PERPETUATE staff following online tests

Aim of the study is  to evaluate the effects of sliding and rocking of single or multiple blocks.
Four tests were executed over the period of 15 minutes:
2 “free vibration “ tests  (pull-release with an initial rotation of 1 degree)
2 shaking table tests:
-   1 Axial acceleration input
-    3 Axial acceleration input
The Seismic Input used for the shaking table tests takes into account the seismicity of the site  of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.

Data acquisition was performed by a new, innovative, high resolution 3-D optical movement detection and analysis system named “3DVision” which is able to track the dynamic displacement of the selected points (markers) of  mock-ups during the seismic tests. Twelve high resolution (up to 4MPixel) infrared Cameras are used to measure accurate 3-D positions of hundred of markers placed on the structure during the seismic tests. This technique allows measuring of 3 axial absolute displacements with easy and fast test set-up, high accuracy and the possibility to link the 3D-motion time histories of the tracked markers with CAD drawings of the structure and validate the FE models in real time during experimental data assimilation.
The measure of the displacements is a crucial task for the numerical and experimental studies in structural dynamics, especially within the displacement based approach in seismic design and calculations. At the ENEA laboratory all the experimental data are acquired by 3DVision system and the experimental campaigns are remotely shared in-live and saved for future use by DySCo Virtual lab.

We had a two-days tough meeting in a very nice campus. We had also a quick visit to the University Concrete Laboratory and the unique experience of ENEA experimental tests on shaking table, performed in ENEA Casaccia Laboratory, directly online via Dysco Lab system.

Study of the foundation type effect

A number of recent large magnitude earthquake events have been characterized by extensive outcropping of the causative fault. Permanent ground displacements associated with surface fault rupture may pose a serious risk to historic structures and monuments. The vulnerability of old masonry buildings subjected to tectonically induced ground distress is studied here through analysis of a simple but representative soil–foundation–masonry wall system.

A series of 3D FE analyses have been conducted to investigate the response of a single masonry wall supported on isolated footings standing upon a 8 m deep layer of dense sand, which is subjected to dip-slip (normal and reverse) tectonic displacement. A validated nonlinear soil constitutive model has been employed which is able of simulating fault rupture–soil–foundation interaction with sufficient accuracy. Apart from the nonlinear soil material response, the numerical method has also accounted for the nonlinearities expected to take place at the soil foundation interface (i.e. sliding, uplifting).

Results provide valuable insight on the different mechanisms of response taking place for different positions of the structure with respect to the fault. The associated foundation performance, judged on a displacement basis, is discussed and found to depend dramatically on the exact position of the structure. The masonry wall response was modelled in a very simplifying manner, assuming elastic behaviour, but assessment of its performance is attempted in view of the magnitudes of stresses developed in it. The distress of the masonry wall due to the tectonic deformation of the ground is also evaluated with respect to the distortion of its foundation system and the amount of uplifting (loss of contact with the supporting soil) and sliding taking place at the soil–foundation interface.

Furthermore, a parametric investigation of the effect of the foundation type on the response of the wall–foundation system is carried out considering three different foundation alternatives: isolated footings, continuous raft foundation, and embedded foundations.

Proceedings contain contributions from EU-CHIC partners and invited experts, who gave presentations in the framework of the 2^nd EU-CHIC Workshop in Olimia Spa, Slovenia, and some contributions which were prepared later as an input to the projects’ development.

Mr Michel Chapuis, from the European Commission, gave a presentation on the current European research politics and perspectives in the field of cultural heritage conservation, protection and preservation research. Subsequently, the CFC and Perpetuate coordinators, and 3ENCULT project representative, gave presentations of their projects that endorsed possible synergies amongst the projects. Sergio Lagomarsino, Perpetuate project coordinator, prepared a written presentation on the project, whilst other cluster projects are summarised in the contribution compiled by Mr Ingval Maxwell.

OBJECTIVES
The Conference aimed at providing an opportunity for engineers and other scientists working in the field of hard soils and weak rocks to meet and present an updated overview of the existing worldwide knowledge on the geological features, the engineering properties and the behaviour of hard soils and weak rocks, as well as of the design and construction methods and problems associated with these materials.
During the last decades, considerable progress has been made in understanding the engineering behaviour of geomaterials that clearly fall into the field of either soil or rock mechanics, as well as in developing design and construction methods to cope with them. However, as regards those materials that fall in the “grey” area between soils and rocks, progress is even more desirable, due to their diversity, as well as difficulties and problems in their identification and classification, in their sampling and testing and in the establishment of suitable models to adequately describe their behaviour.
Borderline materialshas been examined, such as overconsolidated soils, siltstones and clay shales, marls, weakly cemented sandstones and conglomerates, chalk, evaporites etc, as well as highly weathered rocks in general. Characterization and classification of these materials has been considered and emphasis has been placed on the establishment of applicability limits between aspects of their engineering behaviour and on the development of new concepts for their treatment. Both static and dynamic conditions has been considered as well.
