Technical Report: D41

In this deliverable, the European Guidelines for the seismic preservation of cultural heritage
assets are presented. Starting from the idea that a reliable assessment procedure can be the
main tool to respect the principle of “minimum intervention” under the constraint of structural
safety, this document presents the full methodological path for the assessment of cultural heritage
assets proposed in PERPETUATE project.
In particular, target performance levels are properly defined by PERPETUATE for cultural heritage
assets, which consider not only the use and safety of people but also the conservation of the
architectonic and artistic value of the monument. The displacement-based approach for
vulnerability assessment of cultural heritage assets and design of interventions is adopted as
standard method of analysis. Thus, nonlinear analyses, both static and dynamic, are adopted as
the key tool for evaluating the seismic behaviour of masonry structures after damage occurs, till to
near collapse conditions. A classification of architectonic and artistic assets is proposed and
typical damage modes are described in order to address the possible modelling strategies. Four
alternative types of models have been identified and developed with the aim of analysing the wide
variety of historical masonry constructions.
Summarized in an oriented practice tool, Guidelines outline the procedure proposed based on
three main steps (focusing the attention on the scale of single asset). In the first one, the building
is known and the seismic input is defined in accordance with specific safety and conservation
requirements. In the second one, the seismic response of the asset is described through
mechanical model and its capability to satisfy the defined requirements is assessed. Finally, in the
third step, rehabilitation decisions are taken and, if necessary, the second step is repeated for the
design of strengthening interventions Then, the complete set of deliverables constitute the main
reference to deepen the steps and seismic assessment criteria summarized in the Guidelines.

In this document, a short overview on the seismic verification procedure on artistic assets, based on the overall PERPETUATE seismic assessment procedure, is described. In particular, with reference to PERPETUATE classification, the verification approaches to the different classes of assets are defined.
Moreover, the problem of the definition of seismic input for artistic assets with own seismic behaviour (class R) is faced, by proposing a method to define varied accelerograms and spectra at different levels of the hosting structure, able to take into account its filtering effect and in particular, derived amplifications of the motion.
Finally, two example of applications are proposed.

This report outlines the procedure proposed in PERPETUATE project for the seismic assessment of architectonic assets. Being equal the basic principles adopted (founded on the displacement-based approach), its application is contextualized for the wide variety of heritage constructions considered in the project. The seismic assessment is addressed to consider both the whole response of the asset and the possible activation of local mechanisms. A classification in three categories functional to a more effective description of the seismic assessment procedure at global scale is proposed, that is: i) assets composed by a single element or macroelement; ii) complex asset described by a single capacity curve; iii) complex asset described by N capacity curve.

Nonlinear analyses are assumed as the key tool of the seismic assessment. The static ones are proposed as the standard choice to be adopted (thanks to the reasonable computational effort coupled to the reliable assessment that guarantee), whereas the dynamic ones are expressly proposed only for some specific class (Class F). The use of simplified methods based on the use of linear analyses to define the capacity curve is suggested only in case of very complex assets (usually some of those in Class B) for which to perform nonlinear analyses is unfeasible.

Finally, specific criteria for using the results of the assessment to address the rehabilitation decisions are proposed.

Different interventions techniques, both traditional (like as insertion of tie-rods, new buttresses, ring beams, mortar injection, ground improvement, micropiles, diaphragm walls, perimetric slurry walls) and more innovative are discussed. It is important to broaden the knowledge on modelling historical structures with new, innovative modelling tools because modern codes are prepared mostly for new structures. Applying the same models and safety factors proposed for new structures to historical structures is usually inappropriate and leads to invasive interventions, in order to assure seismic safety of historical buildings, which are in collision with conservation requirements. Thus, there is a need to determine the behaviour of historical structures and the effects of interventions on seismic vulnerability more precisely with new experimentally supported modelling approaches. Thus, starting from the review of the results obtainable by adopting traditional techniques, innovative interventions, or updated uses of traditional interventions (including new anchorage system for tie-rods, insertion of transversal connection in masonry walls, lime based restoration grouting technique, etc.) will be tested and designed to better suit the demands about preserving historical structures, materials and key features as much as possible while at the same time satisfy with the safety requirements. Experimental test performed on single walls and full scale mock-ups will be performed to capture behaviour of historic assemblages and effectiveness of strengthening methods. Moreover particular attention will be paid to the modelling of the cultural assets at different scales, in order to evaluate the effect of the intervention not only on the structure of the building but also on the unmovable cultural assets present in it.

In this deliverable, practical tools to model cultural heritage assets are proposed. The aim is to
provide a guide to the seismic modelling of historical constructions for technical operators. Thus,
besides recalling the general theoretical framework already outlined in Deliverable D7, specific
features and tricks related to the different modelling strategies are discussed.

Technical report: D23

In this deliverable, main modelling approaches to artistic assets are discussed. The attention is focused on the two different types of artistic assets defined according to PERPETUATE classification (D4): the artistic assets that are not structural element but are strictly connected to structural elements (class Q), and the artistic asset with own seismic behaviour (class R). In particular, artistic plasters and stone object laying on rigid planes (such as statues, pinnacles, etc…) have been considered in class Q and R respectively.

Concerning class Q, a brief review on models available in the literature for the description of the mechanical interaction between plasters and masonry elements is presented. The rather scarce attention to the topic, testified by very few works in the literature, is highlighted; the use of tools developed in the field of fracture mechanics for multi-layered materials is proposed. Then, the results on an experimental campaign carried out at the University of Genoa on stone masonry walls covered with plaster and subjected to diagonal compression is presented. The results show a high interaction between plasters and masonry supports, despite plaster detachment due to local instability occurred in some cases. A correlation between the drift of the panel and the crack width on the plaster is proposed. The results obtained are in good agreement with other literature data. They highlight that relevant crack may occur also for low values of drift.

The case of artistic assets of class Q is analysed on the basis of the assumption that the description of their behaviour may be faced by rigid blocks models, developed in both static and dynamic field. A short literature review is proposed. The reliability of the proposed models is assessed by comparing numerical results with experimental tests performed on a stone obelisk.
